Port Light Home  /  About the Project /  Historical Background  /  Boats  /  Interactive Route Map  /  For Teachers  /  Contact

The Port Light Project evolved from passionate natives that wanted to preserve and share the rich history of mail and buy boats in Coastal Carolina. Though much of the content is geared towards adults with local connections or visitors seeking historical perspectives, the site also aims to be used as an educational tool for teachers - specifically for the North Carolina 8th grade social studies curriculum. Below you will find curriculum guides tailored towards the NC standard course of study that can be used comprehensively as a unit or abbreviated by selecting prefered components. There are three guides: one primary on social studies (Mainland Migration), one that emcompasses social stuies and ELA standards (Postal to Podcasts), and finally a STEAM lesson (Full-STEAM ahead).

Get the Curricula

Postal to Podcasts: Narrative Stories of the Outer Banks
An NCSCoS Social Studies/ELA lesson plan using the Port Light Project

Mainland Migration: Connecting the Mainland to the Barrier Islands
An NCSCoS lesson plan using the Port Light Project

Full-STEAM Ahead: The Connections from Mainland to Barrier Islands
A STEAM/PBL Lesson using the Port Light Project
