Groups of 3 or less will work with boatbuilders Jimmy Amspacher and Billy Merkley to learn design, engineering, materials and construction of a 6-foot traditional Core Sound skiff.
The experience will include STEM educational principles focusing on the science, engineering and math of traditional boatbuilding. Technology discussions will include how technology has changed traditional boatbuilding to contemporary boat manufacturing. Boatbuilding terminology will be an important learning element of the program.
A history of boatbuilding along Core Sound will be incorporated into the day’s programming during lunch where students will learn the names of Core Sound’s long history of boatbuilding. Brady Lewis, Ambrose Fulcher, Mildon Willis, Julian Guthrie and many others will be recognized.
This camp is open to rising middle school students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The camp will be limited to six, 3 students per boat. There is no charge for the camp.
Students will be accepted based on a one-paragraph (min) short essay from the student as to WHY I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BOATBUILDING. Student writings will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Essays must be submitted by July 5th. Please send your essay to museum@coresound.com If interest is significant, more boat camps will be offered later in the summer.
The skiffs will be available for silent auction bidding during the day and throughout the summer at the museum with final bids taken at the Summer Taste of Core Sound on Aug 25.
