There is not a more dedicated group of volunteers at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center than our "Core Sound Quilters" group who gather every Tuesday (and sometimes more often) to quilt. Their projects range
from their annual raffle quilt to the community quilt, and now an afternoon session for local school students to learn. The Down East Community Quilts have been a major undertaking, but the quilts and the books that accompany each of them (now three in the making) have helped use quilt-making to tell the stories people and places from all of our communities. (Check to gift shop for a copy of the books that include a photograph of each square and the story that makes it special.)
To document the long tradition of quilting Down East, the group has sponsored two "Quilt Appreciation Days" to photograph, document and record quilts from our communities. These photos and records will soon be available here on this website so visit often to learn more.
Below is a Jacob's Ladder quilt made by Beaulah Benton Robinson around 1910. She was born in Sealevel in 1874. She used shirting fabrics mostly which reflects her creativity, artistic style and originality. Currently the quilt is owned by her granddaughter, Evelyn Clyde Harris of Arlantic.

Mrs. Alexina Hill Styron made this Core Sound Cross quilt, also around 1910. It was given to her daughter, Avis. Alexina was the grandmother os William (and Lynn) Gorges who now own the quilt.
