SCIENCE EDUCATION

  • Updating/Revising Education Programs Booklet for Core Sound by school year 2010-2011.
  • Curriculum Development for Cape Lookout outlining classroom programs for Kindergarten, fourth and sixth grade science and social studies education
  • Wildlife Education  (WRC) Programs  throughout the calendar year
  • Willow Pond Trail for Students Project being planned and developed by HI School 5th Grade.
  • Communities in Schools (Summers 2009) providing enrichment programming for Down East schools throughout the summer
  • Summer Camps / National Park Foundation grant to plan and implement four summer camps summer 2010
  • 

HERITAGE / HUMANITIES

  • Collections plans and files are being updated and readied for data base implementation.
  • Heritage Programs at Harkers Island School – Heber Guthrie’s boat building (live webcast) brought wonderful attention to the effort, continued oral history projects, documentary projects, considering joint-proposals to link schools Down East with Ocracoke, Hatteras and beyond
  • Quilt Documentation Day was held in February 2010 bringing the total of quilts documented to more than 180; now working with Dr. Joyce Newman at East Carolina to develop grant proposal for NC Arts Council for further academic study, quilt survey and publication.
  • Jean Dale Restoration, completed September 2010 with Jean Dale celebration for all Harkers Island boatbuilding families; continued oral history collection, publication; planning now for other community celebrations and continued documentation
  • NC Humanities / “Raising the Story” Menhaden Program – February 2010 and continued documentation with Dr. Barbara Garrity-Blake, Beaufort Middle School, Arts Council
  • In-House Exhibit plans for changing main floor exhibits in October are underway.  A schedule for art exhibitions for museum gallery and education hall have been developed with changing photo exhibits, art exhibits and accompanying programs throughout the year planned.
  • Oral History Archive / folklorist Connie Mason collecting oral histories for CALO; development of public access for oral history collections
  • Preserve America – Learning Fisheries Knowledge oral histories (collected Down East) being uploaded to NOAA’s national website
  • Library Development / volunteers Carol Southerland and Sharon Piner working with us to catalog books donated, define scope of collections, books to be purchased
  • 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • Outer Banks National Scenic Byway continued partnerships with Outer Banks communities from North River to Whalebone Junction to implement corridor management plan throughout these communities
  • Hatteras Connections – leadership development and community projects as part of the NC Rural Center Initiative for the central coast
  • Carteret Community College – Heritage Tourism - Entrepreneurship Camp – Middle School Camp for Down East Middle School students to develop small businesses, marketing program and products for heritage businesses
  • Down East Community Partnership with Duke University students, building on research and documentary about Down East’s future, groundwork for sustainable economic development planning and leadership training
  • Carteret Catch providing infrastructure and in-kind support for this education program in partnership with NC Sea Grant, NOAA and local commercial fishermen.cc_logoweb.jpg
